About Unghosted

Unghosted is a community-driven waitlist tracker covering 8 luxury watch brands. Buyers submit what they bought, how long they waited, their region, and whether they had purchase history. Anyone can search and filter the data.

How it started

I was ready to buy my next watch, but I kept running into the same wall. I'd walk into a boutique, they'd take down my information with a polite smile, put me on the “waitlist,” and then I'd never hear from them again. One store wouldn't even take my information at all.

The “waitlist” itself turned out to be the strangest part of all this. For some brands and models it isn't a line you gradually move up, it's closer to a perpetuity. People wait three, five, even six years and still get nothing, with no way to know whether they're next or whether they were ever really on a list at all.

What bothered me most was that nobody could tell me what I was actually up against. I couldn't get a straight answer on how long the wait really was, whether I needed purchase history first, or whether my location mattered. Every answer was a shrug or a secondhand story. I love watches and I love numbers, and here I was being asked to make a five-figure decision with neither.

Things finally changed the afternoon I walked into a store with my kids and just started talking watches with a sales associate. There was no pretense or strategy to it, just a real conversation, and that turned out to be the whole unlock. It wasn't about spend or about a waitlist. It was about a relationship.

The catch was that this lesson cost me months of dead ends, and I only stumbled onto it by accident. There are thousands of people out there right now getting the same silent treatment, sitting on waitlists that may never move, making expensive decisions based on rumor because they have no real data to work from. So I started collecting it.

Why this exists

Brands will never publish wait times because opacity is how the allocation system works. It lets ADs prioritize loyal clients, keeps the experience feeling exclusive, and maintains demand.

ADs won't publish them either. If a dealer posted “Daytona: 3 year wait, $40K spend helpful,” it would change the dynamic with every customer who walks in.

Grey market dealers benefit from the uncertainty too. Long, unknown wait times justify premium markups.

Nobody in the supply chain has any reason to close this information gap, so Unghosted fills it from the buyer side since buyers are the only participants with no inventory to move and no reason to keep the data hidden.

What the data shows

Once enough buyers reported in, the numbers started contradicting a lot of the conventional wisdom. Nearly a third of the steel Daytona buyers in the data had no prior purchase history at all, despite the common belief that you need deep spend to get one. Wait times vary widely by region, with some markets moving several times faster than others. And the pattern that got me my own watch keeps showing up across the reports: the relationship with your dealer matters at least as much as how much you've spent, and often more.

Methodology

All data is self-reported and community-submitted. Submissions are reviewed before publishing. Unghosted is not a dealer, not affiliated with any watch brand, and not a pricing platform.
